JobHop app

An app to make job search easier

Role

UX researcher, UX/UI designer

Tools

Figma, Zoom

Duration

2 weeks

Overview

Job hunting can be a stressful and time-consuming process, often taking weeks or months to secure a desirable position. Unfortunately, the economic outlook has been bleak due to the impact of COVID-19 and recent layoffs, resulting in heightened competition for available job positions. This is especially challenging for students, who typically hope to secure employment prior to their graduation.

JobHop is a job board app that provides quality internship opportunities and early career roles for new graduates.

Problem Statement

Job searching is a daunting and time-consuming process for job seekers due to the overwhelming amount of information presented on job search apps. The plethora of job postings can make it difficult for users to navigate the app and find suitable employment opportunities based on their interests. As a result, many job seekers are left with the daily task of continuously checking for job openings, leading to frustration and anxiety.

This experience is particularly true for students during the internship/early career application process, who must navigate a tedious and long process of applying and waiting to hear back.

Goal

To provide an easy application process for students based on their interests and needs. And providing the updates on their application from one stage to the next, reducing their anxiety and increasing their confidence in applying for jobs.

Lo-fi sketches

I have created the initial sketches of the prototype to further test with the users to get the initial feedback.

After doing the initial round of testing, I received the following feedback on my lo-fi sketches:

1. Company review would be helpful

2. Option to save the jobs

3. Job recommendations based on skills and profile

4. Tracking of applications

High Fidelity prototype

Based on the feedback from lo-fi sketches, I developed the hi-fi prototype

User Testing

I conducted usability testing via Zoom video call with 3 people. I gave users a quick overview of my app and asked them to complete a series of tasks

1. Search and apply for jobs based on location.

2. Search and apply for jobs and find out more about the company.

3. Track the applications of your jobs

They were successful in completing the above tasks and were navigating to other parts of the app

Below are the insights from the testing:

1. Easy to use and navigate

2. They were relieved to discover that they could keep track of their job applications

3. Can easily apply for jobs with a profile

4. Need a sorting and filtering option on my job page

Universal design
  • Equitable use: I attempted to use high contrast in my design so that colorblind users could see all the content on the screen.

  • Simple and Intuitive use: Users can easily navigate back and forth in my app, and the design is simple, with everything accessible from the main page.

  • Perceptible information: Along with the name of the company, a logo is used, to help users understand the company’s name.

  • Low physical effort: Navigation is anchored at the top of pages so that they can easily go to the previous page

Next steps
  • I would add more features, such as displaying the percentage match of the user profile based on the job description.

  • I can also include some courses (learning forums) that will assist future job seekers in improving their skills.

  • Having an interview guide that would further help the job seekers
